The Pilot Implementation of the Inclusive Sports European Model Was Held in Spain

The pilot implementation of the Inclusive Sports European Model, developed with the expertise, work, and contributions of the EU Join Us project partners, was organized by Down España in collaboration with CEDOW, Jerez Volleyball Club, and DOWN CADIZ in Spain.

The Inclusive Sports European Model training, which was taken by sports coaches through the EU Join Us website, was carefully executed by ensuring the numerical balance of participants individuals with Down syndrome or individuals with other intellectual special needs and typically developing individuals, as well as gender balance among the participants.

The inclusive sports activities took place between May 29 and June 1, 2024. A total of 93 individuals participated in these activities, which included both individuals with Down syndrome or other intellectual disabilities and typically developing participants. They came together in sports such as volleyball, football, swimming, and karate with equal participation, without discrimination.

Overall, participants, sports coaches, and the relatives of those observing the sports activities expressed that these inclusive sports activities should reach a wider audience and be organized regularly. The sports activities were evaluated as effective, awareness-raising, and impactful events with a positive effect.
